>How did they do it?
We are the only country in human history where people can vote literally about every major and minor political decision. Our political representatives are almost powerless and only serve an administrative function. Since 1848 (foundation of the modern Swiss federal state), approximately 1,200 to 1,500 proposals and bills originating from the government and political parties have been rejected by a majority of Swiss voters during federal votes (and these are only the federal votes, where all eligible people can vote, not counting the way more numerous cantonal and communal votes). Historically, approximately 30-40% of all proposals that have gone to a vote have been rejected by the majority of Swiss voters. We even vote about changes in municipal tax rates. This system crafted a politically very weird country that is hardocre conservative right wing with extremely lax gun laws and hardocore immigration laws, almost only allowing for white EU citizens to immigrate and naturalize - without being forced to accept the insane right wing totalitarian shit like banned pornhub, forced age verification or payments to Israel (USA), and very liberal and socialist at the same time with Europe's most generous unemployment benefits, extremely protective worker unions and laws (mandatory vacation of 4 weeks for everyone, cancelation periods of 2-3 months) - whithout being forced to accept the insane totalitarian shit like mandatory anti-racism training (USA), prostitution that is only illegal for men to buy (Norway, Sweden, France) or the complete domination by women in the divorce courts. It still blows my mind that we're the only country in human history where a government formed that allows people that much authority. We're like an alien planet compared to all other countries in the world, even compared to our direct neighbors.
