Claiming that being anti-porn is automatically right-wing is a total (and intentional) misread of feminist history, and a convenient one for men who want to keep using porn while cosplaying progressivism.

There is a long, well-documented tradition of left-wing, socialist feminists who oppose the porn industry. These women are not conservatives, they are Marxist-informed, materially grounded critics of patriarchy, and they view porn as a system that eroticizes women's subordination and commodification. That critique is materialist, not moralist.

Men, especially so-called "leftist male feminists", often refuse to engage with this body of work because it implicates them. They’ve only signed onto feminism on the condition that their entitlement to sex and sexual imagery remains untouched. So they strawman all anti-porn stances as "right-wing prudery" to avoid having to actually contend with feminist theory that challenges their consumption habits.

Liberal "choice" feminism (the "sex positive" kind that treats porn as "empowering") is much closer to neoliberal capitalism than it is to any leftist politics. It frames individual choice as inherently liberatory and ignores the broader material conditions and power dynamics. This is market ideology with a feminist sticker on it.

You want to critique right-wing anti-porn groups? Go ahead. Just don’t flatten the conversation by pretending that any opposition to porn must come from right-wingers. Second-wave feminism has been there all along, but men just don't want to hear it.
