To Cambodians, the land is the value. Cambodian pride is a very fragile thing. They used to have an empire and as usually happens in history, that empire got replaced by ours. Now we retain most of the territory and they're a shadow of what they once were so any attempt to revitalize the Khmer Empire always plays well with the Cambodian public. The problems is they never have the power to back up these attempts. Vietnam completely jobbed them in the 1980s and now we're jobbing them in the 2020s.
