He has a surface level want to "Be a hero", but he doesn't understand his own nature as someone "Destructive". He wants to be the deliverer, but can't because that's not who he is, yet he strives for it anyways because he doesn't have anything else he wants.
He cares about the people around him but it's hollow because he cannot love himself enough to truly cherish them. He sacrifices again and again because "he's a hero" but doesn't realize he's also doing it because he has no self-love, because he isn't actually the hero he wants to be.
His true nature is someone destructive and hateful, but he blinds himself to that and marches towards being the hero the world needs, and the hero he wishes he was.
That's why Phainon was a failure, he couldn't save Amphoreus because he was never it's savior despite wishing to be just that.

tl;dr he's a self loathing loser with a savior complex despite not actually being that type of person.
