Consider how many lonely people with no prospects are seeking social connection so they give money to egirls and grifting influencers.
>what do we do? we gather every week at night to pray to evil gods and sacrifice an innocent victim
It's a more gradual process but you can brainwash people into doing some pretty insane shit. Read about how Charles Manson trained people to obey him sometime. And read the book "Ordinary Men" which talks about how the Nazis got 30+ year old military police to kill civilians by appealing to their sense of pride and duty(in the same way middle-aged blue collar classcucks stick up for billionaires and think it's a flex that they work 60+ hours a week).
>if we succeed and manage to summon our god, we'll be slaves and/or tributes for the dark one
I mean, that's the narrative by the mainstream religion and/or the one we have from our elevated POV as readers of the game books/novels. The cult is teaching something else to its followers.
