Part of it is a hold over from some ten to twenty years ago. You younger anons might not understand how out of control the catfishers were. These dudes ran dozens sometimes hundreds of fake profiles, squeezing out the real women from dating sites and other online spaces. Those sites are no longer around. Despite no one wanting to admit to being a victim, it was so common that it bled into normie culture. College Humor did a skit about it. Meanwhile, victim dudes were losing not only their pride but also suffering emotional trauma and losing real money to these con artists.
