Nobody really expects this season/series in general to be plot heavy persay, that would be retarded. Its just moreso there's a bit of lorefagging in between that is juxtaposed with the humor in a nice way. Episode 1 I feel will exist solely to tie up loose ends Season 1 left (Even if it ultimately was a shitpost anyways). Whilst giving us an extra layer of shitpost to look forward to when the time comes (if ever). With that being said yeah I think the show does a good job carrying over continuity/lore while keeping itself mostly self-contained and episodic like most cartoons were at the time.
