To be fair, this is the first time in decades that Israel had fought in a way they want the US involved in.

All true, but Iran is not the police state we are sold.
If they were, then it's different.
And now the war is hot so they are ramping up the control.
But just as an example of why it is difficult.
Not only are there areas of the border where people can easily (in relative peacetime) slip through, many Iranians travel abroad for work etc. Some of these end up in MEK terror training camps in Albania (while papers may show that they haven't been anywhere near Albania) and then come back. Therese are the types of Missad assets used, it's rarely Shlomo Goldberg and pals renting the house but someone with a legitimate background.
