The early chapters were structured more "gamey" so every node needed to have some gameplay and story segments were generally in shorter pieces. What that means is that as things were being written out there would need to be some sort of break in the plot to get fights in. What generally would happen is that random enemies would pop in, you fight, then continue talking.
Since there were very few enemy sprites in the early game, and one of the first chapters involved Jannu attacking France with dragons, wyverns became one of the most common enemies to do this which led to a meme of "conversation-interrupting wyverns."
