I have also heard the explanation that torii were named so for birds that sit on them. The thing about there being originally bird statues on them was new to me.
I'm not really sure what exactly he meant that the birds were considered the "soul of the rice" but he did later mention in other context that birds were thought to carry souls to the sky. So birds were probably seen to have multiple roles.
He didn't speak of the Japanese aborigine. I think there are enough elements similar to North Eurasian shamanism that Shinto ended up having both southern and northern influences.
