Orbán’s party attacks rival by painting him as a Zelenskyy ‘clown’
Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party has launched a new political attack campaign targeting rising opposition star Péter Magyar, portraying him as a clone of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a puppet of Brussels and George Soros.
Billboards and an animated video appeared across Hungary this week under the slogan "Like two eggs" (Mint két tojás). The ads depict Zelenskyy and Magyar hatching from eggs, waving Ukrainian flags, and being controlled by "their masters" — caricatures of George and Alex Soros, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The campaign, sponsored by a pro-Fidesz organization, accuses both men of being "good actors" and "clowns" who are not needed in a time of crisis. The video's narrator claims, "At their request, Zelenskyy is dragging Europe into war. And the Hungarian Zelenskyy votes to admit Ukraine into the EU."
The campaign is a clear attempt by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government to weaponize its anti-war and anti-Ukraine rhetoric against Magyar, a former Fidesz insider whose Tisza party has surged in popularity, posing the most significant challenge to Orbán's rule in years.
Kyiv fired back at the campaign. "Instead of explaining to the Hungarian public how they screwed up the economy, the Hungarian government is busy drawing cartoons with the Ukrainian president," Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgiy Tikhiy wrote on X. "Looks stupid, boring, and unconvincing."
The move is the latest in Orbán’s long-standing effort to undermine support for Ukraine, frequently threatening to block its EU accession and calling for the lifting of sanctions against Russia.
