But he is the marquee DC superhero, and now that he's been contextualized and the world built out a bit I think Gunn will be able to do fun and creative stuff. The boxoffice isn't great, but it's enough to keep the machine going, and I think actors will work for less just to work with him.
A lot will depend on whether the MCU can pull out of its nose dive. No reason to think they can, so Gunn will have the superhero genre for the next decade.
