It's probably helpful to think more along the lines that the borders of what we know as 'china', are really the imperial borders of the last chinsee dynasty. they are imperial borders. encapsulating many MANY diferent ethnicities, cultures and languages. Much like the EU. and less like the US.
The differences between provinces in China is stark. It's like going from France to Germany. Not architecturally, but culturally.
