I do like dragon riders but I feel like it’s better when the situation is reversed. You have not mastered the dragon. The dragon has mastered you. You are the dragon’s pet, and he is having you climb onto his back as extra firepower, and to cast support spells, and possibly to act as his personal squire and herald. The rider is the submissive one in the dragon relationship.
