Jesus gets 2 completely different birth stories.

In one, he's like a european king rising to the throne through prophecy and destiny. In the other he's more like a jewish refugee fleeing a holocaust.

In Matthew's account, King Herod is mentioned, and he tries to kill Jesus. In this story Mary and Joseph are residents of Bethlehem, and only move to Nazareth later out of necessity when Herod's son Archalaeus takes over that area. It's heavy implied by the Greek that jesus is a young boy when all this happens, at least a few years of age.

But in Luke's account, King Herod isn't mentioned at all. Mary and Joseph are residents of Nazareth, who only travel south for the Census of Cyrenus. They have to stay in a manger. But 33 days later they visit the Temple for the ritual purification, and then go right back to their home in Nazareth

As many people have mentioned, the Census of Cyrenus occurred a full 10 years after Herod's death. In fact the entire reason for the Census was because Rome was annexing the territory after it became chaos when Herod died
