others can of course chime in but Phlebas is no where near his best but it does set up the world decently. and even if you DNF Phlebas it's really not a problem since all of the Culture books are set in the same universe but in different areas with different characters. yeah I need to tighten up that Egan chart I hate the colors but I think it's a good laugh
