Yep. Rainbow Magazine was a computer magazine for the TRS-80 Color Computer (and compatibles). No one thought it was connected with homosexuality in any way. The only somewhat ideological connection was a theological one with Noah and the Great Flood, after which God made a rainbow as a sign of his new covenant with man and a promise to never again flood the Earth.
When Rambo movies were smuggled into the Soviet Union, his name was mistranslated as Rainbow. This wasn't seen as weird to the Soviet audience. The University of Hawaii's men's athletic teams have long been know as the Rainbow Warriors (excluding the late June Jones era).
Gay theft of the rainbow is recent and it's amazing how complete of a job they've done with that theft.
