"Although the army began sending thousands of draft orders to young Haredi men after years of exceptions that allowed for institutionalized evacuation of service, the Haredi continues to promote the draft exemption law, and the IDF has failed to significantly expand its runs, two years into the war. "Even at the height of the war, when the situation was much more dire than now, the adult personal in the unit still only did four months of regular service," explains one of the fighters.

The fighters make it clear that they are not presented to longer permanent service in principle, but demand that it be done "for the right reasons." "There are many reasons to make a permanent year for the fighters, but not because of a shortage of power," emphasizes one of them. "You can't take advantage of the morale of the fighters in the commando and say - well, they are good fighters anyway, great guys, let's take advantage of their kindness and keep them for a permanent year because they will agree to it."
