The crisis is with reality. There is a confluence of factors that have made the simple dream of achieving a good life by simply taking part in society unachievable for a majority of young men. Retreat into fantasy is a common response to such times, it's nothing new. If actually creating a life for yourself is next to impossible then of course you're going to look for relief wherever you can find it.
