Maybe not everyone can do this, but I can separate the character from the artist as long as they're willing to put in some minimum effort to act like a fictional person. Like I know that Sigourney Weaver isn't a space miner, but when I watch Alien I'm not watching her, I'm watching Ripley and I can mentally visualize that character over top of the actors face and body.
Of course this is easier with proper costumes, dialogue, and scripting that are believable. But it also goes to hell when the actor just gives up and plays themself (ex. The Rock) or starts winking at the camera and breaking the 4th wall every 10 seconds. At that point then yeah, I'm not watching an anime girl anymore, it's just some e-girl who I know I will never meet.
So it's not even GFE I want, just some adherence to the character they are supposed to be playing in this little online world.
