My mum worked as a nurse for 20+ years and told me stories of mixed raced kids sometimes being born darker than the darker parent and eventually (if kept out of the sun) their skin would turn more into the lighter parent over the next few months.
She used to tell white mothers this a lot of the time if they seemed a bit "disappointed" with the child's skin colour. Sometimes it got her in trouble since they were offended she would even ask.
