At the risk of sounding like an autistic schizo, I believe that the western obsession with realism has been holding back western games for decades now. Now, I’m not one of those spergs who thinks that realistic graphics are never good and games should always try to be stylized, I understand that some stories work way better if the characters look like actual human beings… HOWEVER there’s a lot of devs that treat "realism" as a good as in of itself, that if a game’s graphics or story is more "realistic" then that is inherently improving the game regardless of what the game is actually like. As great example, think of those fucking "realistic" Jax and Daxter redesigns Naughty Dog got hung up on before giving up because the studio literally couldn’t conceive of just… NOT doing a sequel to cartoony platform in a hyperrealistic style. All this focus on realism has really accomplished is games taking too fucking long to come out, taking up too much fucking hard drive space, costing too fucking money (for both the dev AND consumer sides), raising dev AND consumer expectations too damn high, limiting the variety of games that can come out, and making too many ugly bitches. Again, I’m not against realism inherently, I just think that devs like Rockstar were more willing to be more stylistic with their graphics and gameplay, we’d probably be on GTA 9 by now.
