I think with tribal societies without the written word, like with the Maori, a lot of the actual pagan stuff they had just becomes -too- absurd by modern standards. It's less relatable to us than the Epic of Gilgamesh. We're taught it at school still, so they're doing their best to integrate Maori stuff into the curriculum. The old myths just don't land. If it can't land with massive government support and funding, it simply can't ever be revived.
There isn't much to it though because it's an oral tradition, and a lot of it has been fucked over first by missionaries and then by hippies. White hippies in the 1970s have had their filthy hands in bullshitting about a lot of indigenous myths, the Aboriginal concept of dreamtime clearly has their influence.
A lot of the Abo art you see with the dots and stuff was created by an Australian art teacher in the 1970s. I just don't think white hippies can help themselves, in the late 20th century they actually were doing the same shit to Hinduism and reinterpreting it in their own way. And because they were rich westerners, Indians were happy to play along.
