On 18 February 2010, troops stormed the Nigerien presidential palace and arrested President Mamadou Tandja. Tandja had been elected in free and fair elections in 1999, but about ten years later, his leadership became increasingly autocratic. He dissolved the National Assembly and pushed through a constitutional referendum that extended his rule by three years. After removing Tandja from power, the coup leaders established the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy (CSRD) to govern the country. They announced their aim to make Niger an example of democracy and good governance. Many citizens welcomed the coup, and the opposition saw it as a chance to restore democratic rule.
Their hopes were justified. The CSRD organized free and fair elections in early 2011, and opposition leader Mahamadou Issoufou was elected president later that year.
