It’s completely impossible. Any attempt at portraying Imperial Japan as being le bad will crater whatever fandom the series has left in Japan. Given the series’ sales statistics, it would probably actually be most financially sound to just tell the Japanese market to fuck off and instead hyperfocus the series towards Western markets instead. Obviously, this will literally never happen in a million years.
