The switchover to the followup console seemed instant to me. There wasn't even much of a transitional period, even though I felt there was more juice left for developers to truly master the architecture. Early on I felt the more time developers like Tecmo spent on the machine, the better they got with the visuals they were able to push in the DOA games and Ninja Gaiden games. Titles like Burnout 3 and Black were visually impressive to me but possibly held back to be multiplat with PS2, opposed to the possibilities that dedicated focused development on the Xbox could achieve. Even Burnout Revenge which had a later release on the newer generation Microsoft console only really added damage scraped metal decals and slightly higher resolution textures. I have seen videos of people adding RAM and swapping out the CPU with a Tualitin Pentium III, which creates a sort of theoretical mid-generation upgrade Pro console, of which the possibility of running maybe the XMBC multitasked behind a game for retro achievements, maybe even some forked Linux that could allow complex SETI@home or gene folding simulations. The potential may be reached with the community efforts.
