Japan isn't ashamed to like cuteness. It's also got a lot of tropes right out of Japanese kids' entertainment like color coded teammates with set jobs, just like in Power Rangers type stuff. The collectable nature of it tickles Japanese autism just right and it even has oddly homoerotic undertones that the Japanese fangirls love.
Admittedly I don't care very much about the show and am mostly amused by watching the Japanese fandom and their increasingly outrageous comics.
But I know a lot of these guys follow the show closely
