Souls games never had any form of player input that wasn't for combat in some form. Talking to NPCs is a context action that doesn't do anything by itself. But the thing is, the variety in the combat scenarios in the older games was broader and the system involved more mechanics and circumstances that the player had to take into consideration. Souls combat could feel very different depending on whether it was taking place in a boss fight, a dungeon, or even in the PvP arenas, and there were more "quirks" to the tools that the player had available to them.
