I like to imagine that it's due to a lack of interest in something as pedestrian as physical pain. Everyone's well-familiar with that feeling, aren't they? Not very novel. If you can give someone any form you like, and subject them to an infinite amount of new, bizarre sensations, then you're going to find mere pain to be a quite a dull choice. Why only make someone hurt when you could - for example - turn them into an image on a stained glass window, and then shatter them?
