I think it's pretty clear that Opaline was far too nice to little M*sty. It's why she grew up spoiled just enough. Sure, one could say that she wasn't very spoiled, but she was spoiled enough to abandon the Queen's values, hungry for more than what she was given, rather than appreciate what she already had. Opaline's biggest mistake was taking on the burden of caring for her, rather than just dropping her off for some family of little ponies to deal with. One could say that she could've saved such a hypothetical family that trouble, but Opaline is far more important. Either way, what's done is done.
What I can gather is that when M*sty became of age, Opaline did the right thing that any tough but fair parent or guardian would do and make her live her age and work for her living. To pay back your parent or guardian's charity. However, this would not work, and resulted in subsequent tantrums, which requires discipline. This discipline seemed to result in resentment rather than efficiency, and thus, resulted in the ultimate betrayal.
If M*sty wants to be away from Opaline's fire, then so be it. When M*sty dies, she'll find herself fully encased in ice, fully conscious and fully miserable, with her tears frozen forevermore.
