"Devil's Darlin'" was badly damaged on a bombing mission to Kobe when it was attacked by Japanese fighters, and the bomber's commander 1.LT Malone was hit in the chest by a 20mm shell. His co-pilot managed to ditch the plane in the sea near Saipan, and he and the other crew members survived the mission. Malone went down with his bomber.
