My own best guess is a combination of Homestuck getting to his head, his father dying, the absolutely RETARDED work pace he had with Homestuck (often a very large number of new pages per day, completely regardless of most updates consisting of cut-and-paste sprites onto a background), and wanting to squeeze more money out of it while he had the entire world's nerd eyes on him let to him just giving up with it and not caring anymore. For reference the comic was supposed to end some time in 2013 with a simple adventure game for it being kickstarted and aiming to release 2014. Homestuck did not end until 2016, during which time Toby Fox, its most notable musician, had already released Undertale, which was referenced in Act 7's final animation. Homestuck also continued purely as a "canonical fan work" after this as Homestuck^2 or "Beyond Canon," and the bones of the adventure game (after mishandled money, an office rental that didn't need to happen at any point, and Hussie not reading his contract resulted in The Odd Gentlemen instead using the Kickstarter money for Homestuck to make a King's Quest game) eventually released as Hiveswap Act 1 in 2017.

There is much more to this story but it would take a retardedly long time to explain. It did happen over most of a decade or even longer.
