In 1990 the west promised not an inch of NATO expansion to the east would happen. Since then, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, the Baltic countries, Bulgary and Romania have been assimilated. In was only based on these promises the URSS accepted the reunification of Germany. Nothing was written on paper, just a pact of “gentlemen”. The fact they accepted to this resolution with only trust on top of the table and what happened after should tell you all you need to know about who was honorable and trustworthy and who was not.
