>---: After the Ton pair drop we got 2p and 9s. With a 3p draw we'd have a good wait, so do we cut 9s here?
>Owata: No, this is a fold. If you check the haifu, you'll see I cut 9m next.
>---: Surely not because you missed a closed triplet with it?
>Owata: No, that's not a criterion (laughs). After the dealer's 4p drop, he tsumogiri'd 7p and 3p, so he's probably tenpai. It would be fine to cut the safer-looking 2p for now, but even if we connect 9s to something it'll be hard to win with that.
>---: So you dropped the 9m triplet.
>Owata: This has a better chance to getting back to tenpai than a half-assed 7p cut.
>---: You already mentioned that earlier in the book.
>Owata: On top of that, a 2p or 7p discard could even deal into shimocha. He stands out a bit for cutting Ton and the like after all. Tenpai can happen very quickly in sanma, so you never know when the others are dama. With zero Pei dora it's probably not that important to be careful of shimocha, but it's really no good to do things half-assed. That's probably what I was thinking at the time.
>---: Has your thinking changed since then?
>Owata: Not at all. When I looked at this haifu I was surprised by how little my style has changed. I can tell from the haifu that I gave it my all and played with full concentration.
---: I see. And 9s really was the dealer's winning tile.
