Therion is just the Greek word for 'beast' and it's the root word for Therianthropy. You've heard of the terms Lycanthrope, the Werewolf, same stuff. Before it became 'cool' to identify as a 'wolf', it was a type of shamanism. Back in those days, nature was an extremely dangerous place and civilization was a safe place. Ironically, this is the opposite now, where the wilderness is seen as liberating and the cities as dangerous. I think the most famous examples are the Norse Berserkers or the Roman Velites. By taking in that beast, learning to control it, it will grant you strength upon the battlefield. You're shifting your astral self into the form of a beast, a boar then, a wolf now. Though I will call it ironic to use a pack animal to scare off a pack, perhaps it was a dire wolf, or there were wolves backing you up. Then again, there is the lone wolf.

From what my 'spirit' tells me, there are horizontal and vertical paths. The path I am most familiar with is the Path of the Serpent, which goes something like this according to her:
Worm(where she places me)->Snake->Salamander->Wyvern->Dragon->Primordial and each 'step' is more difficult than the last. The Korean Yongs are an example of this, starting as lesser beasts before ascending into full dragons with divine authority. Babalon's beast (the Seven-Headed Dragon) is the Mega Therion which Crowley tried to become, but that 'position' was already occupied long ago. I will not assume what path you are on, if it all, but I would try invoking a bear form. Perhaps the 'savage beast' as she puts it, is your comfort zone.

Ultimately, if whatever you doing works, keep doing it. I have no doubt that there's going to be salivating at the chance of making furry accusations, but this practice is probably older than their countries.
