Life and reign of Emperor Claudius
On January 24, 41 AD, Caligula was assassinated. The city was in chaos as soldiers rampaged around, attempting to eliminate the remaining members of the imperial family. Caligula's tyrannical rule had led them to desire a change in government.
Claudius, Caligula's uncle, knew his life was in danger. He retreated to a house in Hermaeum and, terrified by the news that Caligula had been killed by the guards, hid on a balcony behind the curtains, an attempt to save his own life from the guards, who were now killing several members of the nobility.
His attempt, however, was unsuccessful. A common soldier wandering around spotted his feet and pulled him out from behind the curtains. When Claudius fell to his feet in shock, the guard recognized him and hailed him as emperor! This miraculous turn of events not only saved Claudius' life, but made him ruler of the Roman Empire overnight.
