Yeah that's my point; if the discourse around trans people feels disproportionate, that's because it is. Drummed up out of political convenience.

means there. But you're giving conservatives too much credit. They haven't thought it through that much. The common theme between this, and the way they talk disproportionately about other minorities, is xenophobia. Conservatism is, by definition, a resistance to change; a reactionary worldview reacting violently to anything new and different.
