Any decision they make is gonna be arbitrary and you'll quickly find a whole party's worth anyway, but I think the best way is how it used to be in Dawn/Dusk. You get a choice of multiple battle teams consisting of 1 set Rookie (Lunamon or Coronamon) and two other Digimon that were either Champion or Ultimate to give newcomers a taste of what they'll potentially become, shortly before the game reverts them to babies in a cutscene to begin the story properly.
