I wouldn't exactly say "normal" even if they were wearing more armor, though that's mostly the men which still for the most part holds true in modern FE. I'm playing Mystery of the Emblem and the character designs are just about the most anime thing I've seen in my goddamn life, and that's only the third game in this series
