The internet just accelerated it. I was born in mid 80s as well. I think I grew up "ahead" of my time due to being into computers and the internet from an early age.

first PC was some jank 286 my dad took home from work, running Win 3.1.1. had the Hayes 9600 baud modem and managed to get this bad boy. the rest was history.
