Like the other anon said, he didn't know he was going to lose his identity. I know that hindsight is 20/20, but "hope comes from people acting like people" can be interpreted in a million different ways. He was actually distraught in the middle of the procedure before his personality got completely suppressed.

Forced Shutdown required at least half of the class to be present to activate it and by the time chapter 6 happened there were only 5 of them. It was impossible to do without Makoto. You're blaming him for a situation that was written to be physically impossible to solve alone. At the end of the day Hajime presses it and having received a helping hand does not take away from that. It's also a more compelling way to overcome hardship than characters who are just made to be unbreakable under any circumstance.
