VTT subtitles are a conversion of the .ass ones using Arc's YtSubConverter so that they work in the YouTube player (otherwise you can't do styles, signs and stuff), they are definitely not supposed to be for local playback. The .ass files are almost unstyled though, so adjust as you see fit.
