sunnis are democratic while shiites are feudal and im talking about who they view as the successor of muhammed(shit be upon him). shiites believe muhammeds(shit be upon him) descendants are the true heirs while sunnis believe that the successor should be picked by consensus. way more people liked the idea of not being tied to a leader that mind end up being a lunatic so they chose sunni.
