The war is partly symbolic. The US setup a proxy war, with the US and all of Europe behind it, funding and arming Ukraine. That is NATO. This effort has been unsuccessful, and Russia is winning the war, however slowly. That's a symbolic win for Russia over NATO.
This is especially true given that Trump no longer cares about NATO. We are now at the stage where Europe now discredits itself by failing to save Ukraine via NATO, after having been led to the slaughter by the US. So NATO will lose twice.
