To be completely fucking fair, this is 100% Ian "REMEMBER THE REFERENCES GUYS" Flynn's fault for suddenly showing the moon in that state in Dark Beginnings, after years and years of us accepting the "broken part isn't visible from earth" explanation. I'm sure tickling the 'tisms was worth it.
