I think Zionism specifically refers to the establishment of a jewish state in Israel, but Israel back then was a backwater that the rich didn't want.
Jewish people had no interest in it when highly developed countries like Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, England, Prussia existed.

I'm not sure he's wrong about the race thing either, considering modern Jewish people are not even genetically from Palestine, whereas Palestinians are.
