The rimmed cartridge isn't much of an impediment. The original Ruger 44 had an internal 4 round magazine that loaded from underneath like a shotgun. there was a Mini 14 based .44 Magnum carbine called the 99/44 Deerfield. It used the same four round flush fit rotary mags as the 77/44 bolt action rifle. as far a self defense, I could see running the model 44 like a shotgun. It's s light rifle at just under six pounds and is pretty handy. You'd probably want to use a cartridge belt, keep a round count and top it off as you went.
