David Pro's adaptation is basically a "best of" from the manga. I don't think the directing is bad, and they actual sell the dramatic scenes pretty well. In fact, the original anime show suffered from rushed production at the start, and some of the early episodes are actually better animated in the David Pro anime than in the Pierrot show.
However, being a close adaptation of the manga, actually goes on to hurt it later on. The stories quickly become fairly one note since they're all humorous with a fairly similar style. Unlike later works, Rumiko doesn't really do any long arcs before the ending of the UY manga, and it's all episodic comedic adventures with characters introductions and some very rare dramatic chapters. And that's basically what you get out of the David Pro anime.
The original anime starts similar to that, but after the first 30 or so episodes, the anime staff start exploring very varied styles and techniques when doing anime original content to fill in full episodes (since at that point they change from half episode stories to full episodes). Some of the early anime original content is just turning the chaos of several scenes up several scales, but later on they start inserting scenes and even full stories in completely different styles from what you'd get in the manga. The Pierrot show is still really episodic, but the -style- of the episodes becomes much more varied than in the manga or the David Pro anime by the time you get to the 2nd year of its run.
