That's always how things were. Men on the top got all the women, either as mistresses or as the 2nd or 3rd wife (previous ones died at childbirth).
The remaining men had the option of enlisting into the army and participate in some of the wars that were endemic before the mid of the 20th century. They'd either die (and the problem would sort itself) or return with loot that would make them more attractive to women. Alternatively, they could've joined one of the revolutionary movements (which were full of incel men) or migrate to America or somewhere else.
