Russia is building a new military garrison in the town of Kandalaksha near the Finnish border. This is the first sign of a steady increase in troop numbers 100 km from the border, Yle reports.

Retired Major Marko Eklund, who had a long career in Finnish military intelligence and has been monitoring the Russian armed forces for over 20 years, analyzed satellite images for Yle.

◾ The images reveal that last winter, Russia began large-scale construction in a closed military settlement near the border with Finnish Lapland. Major earthworks were carried out, and several new buildings were erected in the Lupche-Savino garrison, which is situated in the northwestern part of the city of Kandalaksha, about 110 kilometers from the Finnish border.

According to estimates, the two brigades in Lupche-Savino will bring just over 2,000 troops to the area, Eklund says.

The images also show that a significant number of vehicles were brought into the Lupche-Savino-1 area over the past winter.

The Murmansk regional administration has announced the construction of a military town to accommodate a new Russian artillery brigade and its personnel. In addition, Moscow plans to deploy at least part of an engineering brigade in the same location.

◾ Satellite images also show changes at the Sapyornoye garrison on the Karelian Isthmus, which is located about 70 kilometres from the Finnish border.

According to Eklund, the variety of new equipment at Sapyornoye points to engineer troops. He believes the largest vehicles could be pontoon bridges.

The images also show a cleared line, likely intended for a gas pipeline, Eklund says.
